Why Internet Vocabulary Matters

When your internet slows to a crawl or a technician asks whether you want a static IP address, unfamiliar jargon can make a frustrating situation worse. Connection and Speed Terms

Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data your connection can carry per second — typically measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). Think of it as the width of a pipe: wider pipes move more water. Bandwidth does not guarantee speed; it sets an upper ceiling.

Latency measures how long it takes a data packet to travel from your device to a destination server and back, usually expressed in milliseconds (ms). Low latency is critical for video calls and online gaming. A fiber connection can have latency under 10 ms; satellite connections often exceed 600 ms.

Jitter is the variability in latency over time. Even if average latency is acceptable, high jitter causes choppy audio and video because packets arrive at uneven intervals.

Throughput is the actual data transfer rate achieved in practice, which is usually lower than advertised bandwidth due to network congestion, hardware limits, and distance from the provider's infrastructure.

Bandwidth

The maximum data capacity of a network connection, measured in Mbps or Gbps. It sets an upper limit on how much data can be transmitted per second, not a guarantee of actual speed.

Latency

The time, in milliseconds, for a data packet to travel from a device to a server and back. Lower latency means more responsive connections, which matters most for gaming and video calls.

Jitter

The inconsistency in latency over time. High jitter causes choppy audio and unstable video even when average latency appears acceptable.

ISP

Internet Service Provider — the company that connects your home or business to the internet and assigns your public IP address.

IP Address

A unique numerical identifier assigned to every device on a network. It allows routers and servers to direct data to the correct destination.

NAT

Network Address Translation — a router function that lets multiple devices share one public IP address by mapping private internal addresses to a single outward-facing address.

DNS

Domain Name System — the protocol that translates domain names like 'example.com' into IP addresses, enabling browsers to locate the correct server.

Broadband

High-speed, always-on internet access that does not tie up a phone line. The term covers cable, fiber, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite technologies.

Throughput

The real-world data transfer rate actually achieved over a connection, which is typically lower than the advertised maximum bandwidth due to congestion and hardware limits.

Fiber-optic

A connection technology that transmits data as light signals through thin glass or plastic cables, offering high speeds and low latency compared to copper-based alternatives.

DSL

Digital Subscriber Line — a method of delivering internet access over existing copper telephone wires. Speed degrades with distance from the provider's central equipment.

Fixed Wireless

An internet access technology that uses radio signals between a ground-based tower and a receiver on a customer's property, commonly used in rural or underserved areas.

Network Infrastructure Terms

ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the company that sells you access to the internet — familiar examples include cable companies and telephone carriers. Your ISP assigns you an IP address and routes your traffic to the broader internet.

IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a numerical label assigned to every device on a network, functioning like a postal address for data. IPv4 addresses appear as four numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format to accommodate far more devices as the internet grows.

NAT (Network Address Translation) is a process your router uses to let multiple devices in your home share a single public IP address. It translates between your internal private addresses and the one public address your ISP provides.
